Sara Wheeler & Hugh Thomson are both seasoned travel writers and broadcasters. They discuss the secrets of their trade and their latest journeys and books - in conversation with David Lough

After books about a Greek island and Chile (Travels in a Thin Country ), Sara Wheeler spent seven months at the South Pole researching Terra Incognita: Travels in Antarctica . She travelled and wrote about Russia, Alaska, Greenland, Canada and North Norway before reaching the opposite pole in The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic . Now she has set out to explore Russia's vast literal, literary and emotional landscape in Mud and Stars: Travels in Russia with Pushkin and Other Geniuses of the Golden Age .

Hugh Thomson has also explored wild corners of the planet, from the edges of Peru to the Himalayas. His books include The White Rock: an exploration of the Inca Heartland, Nandi Devi and Cochineal Red:travels through ancient Peru . Tequila Oil is a memoir about getting lost in Mexico. He wrote about his own country for the first time in The Green Road into the Trees: an exploration of England which won the prestigious Wainwright award in 2014. He stays at home again in his most recent work, but it carried echoes of earlier journeys:One Man and a Mule: Across England with a Pack Mule
